Calico Presents: On Location
Pop-Up Exhibition at A.MANO Brooklyn
Featuring works by:
Ben Cowan, Jon Legere,
Mark Mann, & Kate Nielsen
June 14 - July 28, 2024
On Location brings together recent 2D and 3D works by Ben Cowan, Jon Legere, Mark Mann, and Kate Nielsen. Throughout the show a common thread of “place” emerges. Each artist utilizes this notion to a varying degree, and we find these moments of consideration in the work as anchor points. The seemingly obvious element of “location” affecting one's work can be taken for granted, but it is unique and nuanced for each individual. This theme carries over in a more general sense as Calico begins this new phase of bringing art shows into other spaces - working on location.
Kate Nielsen’s work has been described as being rooted in an abstract environmentalism. The physical structure and subject matter are organic, but cuts, rips, and scrapes result in the creation of new forms. Inspired by desert landscapes and the buildup of rock and sediment strata, Kate develops her own topographies. Each piece can feel like a specific yet obscure place at the same time.
Calico Gallery Press Release:
Kate Nielsen: Being Earthbound
A Solo Exhibition of Recent Paintings
3/17/23 - 4/16/23
“Earthbound” can be defined as being firmly set in or attached to the earth, limited to the earth or its surface, or having only earthly interests.
Calico is pleased to present Being Earthbound, a solo exhibition of recent works by Kate Nielsen. Inspired by her interests in earth sciences, metaphysics, and consciousness, Nielsen is known for her unique approach to painting. Her process involves a building-up of layers of paint onto sheets of glass that are then peeled, cut, and reincorporated into new forms. The results are meditations on the accumulation of layers and the excavation of materials, harnessing complexity, and finding simplicity within chaos. Viewers may find that Nielsen’s paintings conjure ideas of geological extremities, microscopic biology, and cosmic otherworldliness.
Kate Nielsen is a painter and illustrator living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, and her work has been featured at the Strohl Art Center, Nha Minh, Present Company, and The Museum of Art and Design, among others.

An ongoing series of paintings based on the theme of disaster survival tips.
Is it a lake or is it a cell? My work can be viewed on a macro or micro level. My day to day studio practice is a meditation, beginning with a process that involves building up layers of acrylic paint that are then peeled, cut, and reincorporated into a new forms. While I oscillate between figurative and abstracted subject matter, what connects all of my work is technique, layering and collaging mats of peeled acrylic paint. My descent into abstraction is inspired by recent trips to the desert, the rock formations, the lakes, and the landscape of the Western United States, where I was born and raised. My work has been described as being rooted in an abstract environmentalism, the physical structure and subject matter is organic. The underlying thread is a vibration of energy, an agitation. Cuts, rips, and scrapes that result in the creation of new forms. The slow build up of seemingly disparate layers of paint, come together to form autonomous structures, that don’t require a foundation or canvas backdrop to adhere to.
